Super changes should be made rarely: Bowen

Shadow treasurer Chris Bowen says a Labor government would create a panel of experts to overview superannuation policy every five years.

Shadow treasurer Chris Bowen believes superannuation should be removed from the annual discussions and speculation surrounding the budget.

Instead, a Labor government would create a council of superannuation guardians to overview any necessary changes every five years, linked to the release of the Intergenerational Report.

He said changes to super policy and tax treatment should be made "carefully and rarely".

"That can be damaging to confidence," Mr Bowen told Fairfax radio on Friday after chairing a discussion of superannuation experts, business, unions and community groups in Sydney.
