Robert Wright will step down as chairman of sports, auto and camping goods retailer Super Retail Group, after eight years in the role.

Mr Wright, who has been chairman of the company since 2009 and a director since May 2004, will be replaced by fellow non-executive director Dr Sally Pitkin at the annual general meeting in October.

The group said Mr Wright had chaired the company through a "period of significant growth and transformation" including the buying of the Rebel Sport and Amart All Sports businesses.

Mr Wright described his time as chairman of the Australian company as a "great pleasure" and said the company will be fortunate to have Dr Pitkin's "capacity and experience".

"Sally brings to the role a great depth of understanding of the company and I am certain that Sally shall provide outstanding leadership," Mr Wright said in a statement on Tuesday.

Dr Pitkin joined the board in 2010 and has served as chair of its human resources and remuneration committee since its foundation in 2011.

Super Retail Group, which houses a number of brands including Supercheap Auto, Rays and Camping Fishing, has more than 630 retail stores and almost 12,000 staff members across Australia.

In February, the retailer recorded a 66 per cent lift in half-year profit to $74.4 million thanks to a significant boost in sales and earnings.
