Despite completing a spectacular sprint double at the Canberra Track Classic, Olympic and world hurdles champion Sally Pearson insists she could have gone much faster.

The 28-year-old started proceedings on Saturday by winning the flat 100m in 11.16 seconds ahead of her leading domestic rival Melissa Breen.

Pearson's time was her second-fastest and just two hundredths of a second outside her personal best of 11.14 set in 2007.

The Queenslander was just as impressive in winning the 200m in 22.97 - marking the first time she had broken the 23-second barrier for the half-lap race.

"Obviously I'm happy with a PB and second-fastest time ever in the 100m," said Pearson.

"But I'm not satisfied with the time I ran (in the 200m) because I felt I could go a lot faster.

"I think we'll see some really fast times this year."

Pearson claimed she still faced fear every time she raced.

"Fear's always there; every time I race, I'm scared," she said.

"I think that's the passion coming out of you. You want it so badly that it scares you if it doesn't go the way you want it to."

Breen was delighted with her second-placed time of 11.27 in the 100m - which was a qualifier for August's world championships in Beijing.

Almost a year ago to the day on the same track at the Australian Institute of Sport, Breen broke Melinda Gainsford-Taylor's longstanding 100m national record with a time of 11.11.

"It's obviously awesome to have Sal come here - it obviously brought out the best in me," Breen said.

"I ran 11.50 a few weeks ago so, to come out and run 11.27, which is the A qualifier for the worlds, is pretty awesome."

National record holder Alex Rowe also bettered the world championships qualifying standard on Saturday with a commanding victory in the 800m in one minute 45.38 seconds.

Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Kelsey-Lee Roberts won the women's javelin with a best throw of 63.78m, just 8cm better than Kathryn Mitchell.
