An investigation into the social networks of young Australian migrants shows some may be at risk of social exclusion if sufficient employment, educational and social support isn't made available at crucial times.
A survey of more than 500 young people from African, Arabic speaking and Pacific Islander backgrounds by the Australian Red Cross and Monash University found that while some support networks, such as family, remained strong, others were problematic.
Professor Fethi Mansouri from Deakin Universtiy is one of the authors of the study.
He told Peggy Giakoumelos late adolescence is a critical stage in most people's lives, but some young migrants may struggle to get the support they need.
