Union heavyweight Paul Howes has thrown his support behind Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's proposal to change Labor Party rules to make it much harder for a leader to be deposed.

Mr Howes was a prominent supporter of Julia Gillard when she toppled Mr Rudd as Labor leader in 2010, and steadfastly supported her despite bad polling until she was deposed last month.

Mr Howes' support comes as key Gillard supporters also rally behind Mr Rudd's plans in the hope that that it will garner greater electoral support.
