Surf star Wilson takes on mechanical waves

Julian Wilson will be among the Australian contingent at the first-ever World Surf League event on mechanical waves at Surf Ranch Pro in California this week.

The world's best surfers, including Australia's Julian Wilson, are heading to California's farm country this week as they compete in the first-ever World Surf League event on mechanical waves.

The inaugural Surf Ranch Pro, in Lemoore, features a man-made lake which takes away the uncertainty of ocean conditions.

The event - round eight on the men's world tour this year - starts on Thursday and will use a new leaderboard style format with surfers earning scores for "runs" rather than standard heats.

Brazil's Filipe Toledo leads the men's championship standings after seven rounds. Wilson is in third place ahead of fellow Aussie wave stars Wade Carmichael (5th), Owen Wright (6th) and Micky Wright (11th).
