Mick Fanning and Gabriel Medina will have to wait at least another day to resume their world surfing title battle after the Pipeline Masters was put on hold on Sunday.
Organisers were able to get through most of the second-round heats, with American Kelly Slater keeping his slim world title hopes alive with a victory over local wildcard Reef McIntosh.
When competition does resume, Fanning has been drawn against France's Jeremy Flores in a knockout third-round heat.
The Australian almost certainly needs to win the final event to pip Medina to the title, although if the Brazilian falls in his third-round heat against local Dusty Payne, Fanning's chances increase.
Slater needs both of his world title rivals to be eliminated in the next round to have any chance of winning a record 12th title.
Association of Surfing Professionals commissioner Kieren Perrow said he was hopeful of a resumption on Monday.
"It was really challenging today and we've seen some incredible waves," Perrow said.
"We've been watching closely and the size of the sets has really ramped up, with sets cleaning everyone up.
"We'll hope for it to drop of a little overnight and for the winds to be good in the morning."
