Surfer bitten in NZ shark attack

A surfer is in hospital after a run in with a shark in New Zealand left him with wounds to his leg.

A surfer has three bite wounds on his leg after a shark attack off the coast of southern New Zealand.

The 28-year-old was on his board about 50 metres out from Porpoise Bay beach near Curio Bay about 8.20pm on Friday when he was attacked by the shark.

He has three bite wounds from his thigh to his calf.

A rescue helicopter flew him to Southland Hospital where he is in a stable condition.

The Department of Conservation has been notified and notices have been put up asking people not to swim in the area.

In January, James Grant was bitten on his leg by a seven-gill shark at Southland's Garden Bay.
