World Surf League officials are confident competitors will finally return to the water on Friday after they called a fifth consecutive lay day in California

Finalists, including Australians Mick Fanning, Joel Parkinson, Adrian Buchan and Dimity Stoyle have been waiting since Sunday to return to the water, with a combination of low swells and local rules have kept them from competing.

"We've been watching things really closely all morning," said WSL Commissioner, Kieren Perrow.

"The swell has slowly started to build in but the decent sets have been few and far between. Given that, and the fact that it's supposed to build throughout the day, we're going to be off for the day and come back in the morning.

"It's very likely that we'll be running the event tomorrow and we'll have an exciting finals day."

WOMEN'S SEMI-FINALS:

Bianca Buitendag (South Africa) vs Lakey Peterson (US)

Carissa Moore (Hawaii) vs Dimity Stoyle (Australia)

MEN'S QUARTER-FINALS:

Filipe Toledo (Brazil) vs. Joel Parkinson (Australia)

Adriano de Souza (Brazil) vs. Wiggolly Dantas (Brazil)

Adrian Buchan (Australia) vs. Mick Fanning (Australia)

Gabriel Medina (Brazil) vs. Nat Young (US)
