Andrew Cotton, a 34-year old father of two, took on the twenty-four metre monster off the coast of Portugal.
Mr Cotton was towed onto the six story-high mammoth by the current big wave world-record holder Garrett McNamara from Hawaii.
Mr Cotton held his position on the wave for ten seconds before being swallowed by the large rush of white water.
Surfing at a height of 24 metres, if verified, would beat Garrett McNamara's record of 23.7 metres set in the same coastal waters in 2011.
The ocean off Praia do Norte, at Nazare's North Beach swells into gigantic waves due to the underwater Nazare Canyon.
This geological formation is 5000 metres wide, 230 kilometres long and is responsible for the 30 metres high waves.
The Association of Surfing Professionals will review the footage to determine if this is a new world record.
Several attempts have been made to break the record.
Last September, Brazilian surfer Carlos Burle made a strong attempt at the record at Praia do Norte.
That same day, Andrew Cotton also tried to beat the record.
Early last year, Garrett McNamara rode a wave off the coast of Portugal that he believed broke his earlier record but that hasn't been confirmed.
