Surge in arrivals on Italian coast

An aid agency says Italy needs help from other European countries to deal with a surge in migrants and refugees arriving on its Mediterranean coast.

Rescued migrants aboard an Italian coast guard ship

Italian authorities have been dealing with a surge in migrants and refugees arriving on the country's Mediterranean coast by boat.

Many are refugees from the conflict in Syria, while others are from various African countries.

Aid and development agency Save the Children says hundreds have arrrived in Italy recently, many of them children.

Spokesman for the agency in Sicily, David Brandeland, told Darren Mara Italy needs help from other European countries to deal with the influx.
