Survey finds teen 'sexting' widespread

A national survey of high school students shows that the practice of 'sexting' is fast becoming the modern-day form of courtship.

Close to 43 per cent of year 10, 11 and 12 fans have sent a sexually explicit text, a La Trobe University study found.

But experts have warned that not only is the practice illegal - it also has potential long-term consequences, that teenagers may not take into account.

A La Trobe University study into teen sexual health has found that almost 43 per cent of year 10, 11 and 12 teenagers have sent a sexually explicit text, while 54 per cent have received one.

Close to 26 per cent have sent a nude or near nude image of themselves, about 42 per cent have received a nude or near nude photo or video.
