A 59-year-old man is to be arrested for the 1999 abduction and murder of West Australian teenager Hayley Marie Dodd.

Special Crime Commander Pryce Scanlan would not name the man or say if he was in WA, but said officers had told the suspect on Monday that they had issued an arrest warrant for him.

Police will allege the man abducted Hayley as she was walking along North West Road, Badgingarra, about 200km north of Perth, on July 29, 1999.

It will also be alleged he murdered Hayley and disposed of her body, which police are still looking for.

Commander Scanlan said Hayley's family were very pleased someone would be charged.

"It offers them a degree of comfort," he said.

The breakthrough brings one of the state's most high-profile cold cases into its next chapter as police move to prosecute the man in a WA court.
