Suspended Vic MP slams East West Link

The Victorian government has acted like the former Rudd government in the way it has handled the East West Link project, independent MP Geoff Shaw says.

The Victorian government's handling of the East West Link is similar to the former Rudd government's "ludicrous" handling of infrastructure projects, suspended independent MP Geoff Shaw says.

The state balance-of-power MP says $8 billion has been set aside for the 8km project.

"That's a billion dollars per kilometre, which is pretty much Kevin Rudd-type figures, when he was throwing money around on ludicrous projects like the roofing installation fiasco," Mr Shaw said.

Mr Shaw said if the money was shared across the 88 Victorian electorates, each region would receive more than $90 million.

"These billions of dollars spent on eight kilometres of road seems better spent on schools, hospitals and sporting facilities, as well as restoring the direct link to Flinders Street for Frankston rail services," he said in a statement on Friday.

Mr Shaw said the project could not be justified without a business case, and added it had only mixed support.

"The coalition government should be taking this project to an election to establish whether this is actually what Victorians want or simply release the business case."

The Liberal-turned-independent MP for Frankston has been suspended since June 11 for misusing his taxpayer-funded car.

He has to repay more than $6800 for the vehicle misuse and is expected to apologise to parliament when he returns from his suspension on Tuesday.

The government hopes to sign contracts for the eastern part of the East West Link project before Victorians go to the polls on November 29.
