German driver Adrian Sutil on Friday joined Swiss racing team Sauber, as expected, after his former Formula One team Force India signed Sergio Perez of Mexico.

"I am really happy that we could agree. Even though I knew for a while where I would be heading, the talks took longer than expected," said Sutil, who had been with Force India since 2008 save for the 2012 season.

The 30-year-old had an up-and-down 2013 season, taking fifth place in the Monaco Grand Prix while also failing to finish four times and placing 13th in the final standings.

"After six years as a regular driver with Force India with many highlights, it was about time to accept a new challenge," said Sutil.

"I am certain that we will have a successful future with Sauber and I will do my part."

It is not known who will partner Sutil who effectively swapped seats with Nico Hulkenberg who announced some months ago he was leaving Sauber for Force India.
