South Sydney star John Sutton is set to be sidelined for up to six NRL games after suffering a fractured jaw in the Rabbitohs' win over Sydney Roosters on Sunday.

Sutton suffered the injury in the first half of Souths' 34-26 win over their bitter rivals at ANZ Stadium.

But the 30-year-old played on in the round two fixture.

In a statement on Wednesday the Rabbitohs said Sutton had suffered "an incomplete fracture of his jaw".

Sutton was initially named to play in Souths' round three match-up against Wests Tigers on Sunday.

Rabbitohs coach Michael Maguire will name Sutton's replacement for the ANZ Stadium clash one hour before kick off.

The injury continues a troubled start to the season for the former Rabbitohs skipper, whose Arizona arrest created a furore last month.
