Swallow wins Suns club champion prize

Gold Coast midfielder David Swallow has broken Gary Ablett's stranglehold on the Suns' club champion award, winning the prize by seven votes.

Gold Coast's David Swallow has capped off a solid AFL season by winning the Suns' club champion award.

It's the first time someone other than Suns' captain Gary Ablett has won the annual award, with the dual Brownlow Medallist's season-ending shoulder injury in round 16 dashing his hopes of retaining the prize for a fourth year.

Swallow, the 2010 No.1 draft pick, traded the lead with Ablett throughout the count before finishing with a total of 240 votes for the year.

The 21-year-old finished ahead of forward Tom Lynch (233) and Dion Prestia (230).

Swallow polled in 21 of 22 matches in a year which included several top displays including a 22-vote haul against Adelaide in round 11 and a 23-vote performance against Collingwood in the same game which ended Ablett's campaign.

Ablett finished fourth with 190 votes, despite his injury.

In other awards posted at the Suns' club championship dinner on the Gold Coast, defender Steven May picked up the players' player and most improved player prizes while veteran Michael Rischitelli was named the club's most professional player.
