Collingwood star Dane Swan rates the chances of continuing his AFL career beyond this season as 50-50.
The 2011 Brownlow Medallist is out of contract at the end of the season.
He said on Wednesday his form and how the team performs this year will determine his playing fate.
Swan is 32 and has played 257 games for the Magpies.
He will play more up forward this season, with some pinch hitting through the midfield.
"I haven't made a decision yet, so at the moment it's 50-50 I guess whether I go on," he said.
"If I'm in the 'twos' by round 18, they won't re-sign me.
"If we win the flag this year I will probably give it away, but that would be the great plan.
"If I can see we're pretty close to a flag, I think I will try and go on."
After a disappointing 2014 season he called putrid, Swan's form was much better last year.
"It was nice to shut a couple of them (media) up, who said I was finished," he said.
"I can have a great year all I want, but if we don't play finals, which is where the club expects to be ... it's really all for nothing."
Swan has had a solid pre-season and is even spending time in the gym as he tries to help the 'Pies return to the finals for the first time in three seasons.
"I'm actually enjoying the weights I'm doing now, which is weird coming out of my mouth because I didn't like doing them there for about 10 years," Swan said.
But off the field Swan has had his problems.
The Albion Hotel in South Melbourne, which he part-owns, burned down last October.
And in January, Woman's Day published nude photos of Swan and teammate Travis Cloke.
"It's really no-one's business but my own, so I've dealt with it," Swan said of his off-field dramas.
"That's about it."
Meanwhile, teammate Jamie Elliott is unsure when he will recover from a persistent back injury and return to playing.
The high-flying small forward will start running on Monday, but there is no timeframe on his return.
"It's hard to put a week on it - I don't know when I will be back," Elliott said.
