Swans can't afford to drop off now: coach

Sydney coach John Longmire says his side need to be relentless in their approach to the final weeks of the AFL season if they are to stay atop the ladder.

They might be having a few days off but AFL ladder-leaders Sydney promise they won't take their foot off the pedal as another heavyweight showdown with premiers Hawthorn looms.

The Swans on Saturday night extended their winning streak to 12, equalling the club's all-time record, with a 71-point drubbing of Carlton at the SCG.

It started out as a fairly even and low-scoring contest but ended up a one-sided affair after a 10-goal assault in the third quarter.

Half of those came from superstar forward Lance Franklin, who helped his side pile on 64 points to the Blues' one in the term.

"Our second half was fantastic," Swans coach John Longmire said.

"We were maybe trying to be a little bit cute in the first half at times, and sometimes that's not the way to play footy in those type of conditions.

"You've just got to go with effort rather than finesse, and our thought our effort was very good."

The victory keeps the Swans atop the AFL ladder, one game clear of reigning premiers Hawthorn - whom they face after this week's bye on July 26 at the MCG.

The Swans beat Hawthorn by 29 points when they met at Sydney's ANZ Stadium back in May and will be keen to maintain that dominance.

"The players will have a couple of days to mentally and physically have a bit of a rest, but we'll come back in at the end of the week and switch back on and get going again," Longmire said.

"We can't afford to drop off. You drop off a little bit, you give the opposition a chance.

"We've got to be relentless in our approach to the contest, relentless in our approach to the opposition every week and make sure we've giving our best.

"We've been able to do it to this point, but there's no guarantees in footy. You've got to keep going."

Longmire said he was unsure whether injured stars Kurt Tippett, Rhyce Shaw and Dan Hannebery would be back for their next round blockbuster, although all three are expected to be back running this week.

But the coach had high praise for youngster Sam Reid, who has stepped up in Tippett's absence.

He delivered one of his best performances of the season on Saturday night, collecting four goals and five marks.

"He was the one that really led the charge in the third term," Longmire said.

"He's a disciplined, smart, versatile player and it was good for him to get some reward on the scoreboard."

Ruckman Mike Pyke also proved his worth with a career-high 53 hit-outs, while Brownlow Medal contender Josh Kennedy broke the AFL record for most contested possessions in a match with 29.

"I knew that (former teammate) Jude Bolton held the record, so I was happy to pass that. I've been working on it for a few years," Kennedy said.

"But it doesn't mean much, to be honest. It's back on the horse and business as usual on Monday."
