Swans' McVeigh signs for 17th season

Sydney have ended speculation 2012 premiership co-captain Jarrad McVeigh could leave the club, signing him for a 17th AFL season.

Sydney stalwart Jarrad McVeigh is happy to stay a one-club man and will play on for a 17th AFL season.

The former co-captain signed a one-year deal, putting an end to speculation other clubs were interested in prising him out of Sydney.

McVeigh said he was close with Gold Coast coach and former Swans assistant coach Stuart Dew and spoke to him regularly, but he hadn't been approached by other clubs.

"No offers or anything have been put to me from anyone,' McVeigh said on Thursday.

"It was clear that I want to be a one-club player. I value that pretty highly and I'm pretty happy that's the way it's going to be."

McVeigh said the decision was based more on his physical condition than getting his head around whether to play on.

"I've always been pretty strong willed, so it wasn't about that, it was more probably the body side of things," he said.

"This year I had my first (full) pre-season for probably three or four years which has led me into a lot better season than I've had previously."

While he has had a number of soft tissue injuries in recent years, the defender remains one of the Swans' most influential players.

He has played 18 games this year, impressing with his invariably accurate disposal under pressure and and organisational skills on the half back line.

"My form has been up to a high standard and I'm rapt to be going around for another year," McVeigh said.

"I knew going into the season that it could be my last but then I thought I don't want to go into a season thinking like that, because then you might play like it.

"So I really wanted to play with a chip on my shoulder, so to speak, and deal with it at the back end of the year."

McVeigh, who was drafted in 2002 and made his debut in 2004, has played 318 games, placing him third on the Swans' all-time list behind former teammates Adam Goodes (370) and Jude Bolton (325).

He didn't play in the 2005 grand final winning team but was in the side the following year when they lost the season decider to West Coast.

He was co-captain of the 2012 premiership-winning side and and also played in the 2014 and 2016 grand final losses to Hawthorn.

When he plays in the elimination final against GWS on Saturday week, McVeigh will join Goodes in having played 28 finals matches, the most by any Swans player.
