Swans mull best forward mix after AFL loss

Sydney coach John Longmire admits picking underdone forwards Lance Franklin and Daniel Menzel in the same team hasn't worked as well as the AFL club had hoped.

Sydney's forward line remains a work in progress, with the AFL club all but admitting it might have erred by picking the underdone duo of Lance Franklin and Daniel Menzel in the same team.

Franklin and Menzel both underwent off-season groin surgery.

Franklin was fit for the Swans' season opener but missed rounds six to nine because of a hamstring injury.

Menzel made his club debut on Saturday against former team Geelong, when the Swans had more scoring shots than the ladder-leading flag favourites but fell to a 22-point defeat.

Franklin kicked 1.2 against the Cats while Menzel finished with 1.1.

"We discussed playing both Franklin and Menzel off limited preparations ... you could say it didn't actually work as well as what we hoped it would," Swans coach John Longmire said on Monday.

"We went in fully prepared that was going to be a possibility ... and to be fair to them, they haven't played a lot of footy together.

"We were expecting or hoping for a better contest up in our front half in that regard but they were a quality defence last week - Geelong has one of the best.

"We come up against another quality defence this week in West Coast, who are very good at intercept marks."

Delivery into the Swans' forward line is another piece of the puzzle that has them ranked 14th in the league for points scored in 2019.

Menzel pulled up sore after his first AFL match since the 2018 elimination final but nothing to suggest he was in doubt for Sunday's SCG clash with the Eagles.

"He came back into an AFL environment that was red hot - Geelong in Geelong ... he'll recover OK. We expect him to be available," Longmire said.

Franklin has played two games at AFL level since returning from the latest injury setback in his decorated AFL career.

"He was able to do a bit of training last week, which was good," Longmire said.

"He's like anyone - you get back into the groove after missing a month of footy and having no pre-season.

"I'm sure he'll be able to build on (the past fortnight)."
