Sydney have appointed former Geelong and St Kilda forward Charlie Gardiner as the AFL club's new football manager.

Gardiner is a senior associate at law firm Arnold Bloch Leibler. He played 63 AFL games from 2002-08 before focusing on a legal career.

Gardiner, selected by the Cats in the 2001 'super draft' alongside Gary Ablett, Jimmy Bartel, Steve Johnson and James Kelly, will take over in November from former teammate Tom Harley.

Harley is replacing Andrew Ireland later this year as the Swans' chief executive, a succession plan the club had announced 11 months ago.

"I have the utmost confidence in his ability to work with our senior coach John Longmire and the other members of our football department," Harley said in a statement.

"Charlie is an outstanding person with strong values, which clearly align with our club values."

The Swans have been the league's most-consistent team over the past 10 years. They sit third on the ladder and haven't missed the finals since 2009.
