Swedish Princess Madeleine gives birth

The Swedish monarchy's popularity has fallen amid a series of scandals, but a majority still favour the institution, which now includes a baby girl.

Princess Madeleine of Sweden, the youngest child of King Carl XVI Gustaf and fourth in line to the throne, has given birth to a girl in New York.

"Both mother and child are in good health," the Swedish Royal Court said in a statement on Friday.

The 31-year-old princess - whose full name is Madeleine Therese Amelie Josephine - married US-British banker Christopher O'Neill in a lavish ceremony in Stockholm in June.

The couple live in New York and the baby is their first child.

Madeleine's sister, Crown Princess Victoria, is first in line to the throne, followed by her almost two-year-old daughter Estelle.

Victoria's and Madeleine's brother, Carl Philip, is third in line.

The Swedish monarchy's popularity has fallen in recent years amid a series of scandals surrounding the king, but a majority are still in favour of the institution.
