Champion swimmer Nick D'Arcy has been ordered to pay damages to fellow swimmer Simon Cowley after lashing out at him in a Sydney bar.

Cowley was awarded at least $180,000, including $135,000 for pain and suffering, after launching a civil action against D'Arcy.

Cowley, a triple Commonwealth Games gold medallist, suffered serious injuries, including multiple facial fractures, as a result of the 2008 incident at The Loft bar in Sydney's CBD.

D'Arcy had in 2009 pleaded guilty to recklessly causing grievous bodily harm over the incident.

He was given a suspended jail sentence of 14 months, which he has completed.

D'Arcy and Cowley had been at the bar celebrating with separate groups of friends after the Beijing Olympics trials.
