Trent Sainsbury has joined fellow Socceroos Tim Cahill and Alex Gersbach moving clubs as he seeks match fitness before the World Cup.

The central defender has been loaned from Chinese Super League side Jiangsu Suning for a second time - this time to Swiss Super League side Grasshopper Zurich.

"We hope to work with him long-term," Grasshoppers' head of football Mathias Walther said.

"Trent is notable for his strong one-on-one action and his ability to build up the game (from defence)."

The 26-year-old's debut for the Swiss side may be delayed as he recovers from the groin surgery he had late last year.

He isn't scheduled to come up against fellow Socceroo Tomi Juric's FC Luzern until mid-May.

Sainsbury became the first Australian to play for Inter Milan last season after joining the Italian giant on a six-month loan.

Last month, former Melbourne City striker Cahill signed with English Championship side Millwall while 20-year-old Gersbach moved from Norway on loan to French second-division club Racing Lens.
