A Sochi surprise on day four of the Winter Olympics as Switzerland's Iouri Podladtchikov gets the gold in men's snowboard halfpipe over former American champion Shaun White.

Podladtchikov, nicknamed "I-Pod", earned an impressive 94.75 points for his halfpipe performance. He was followed by two Japanese teens, 15 year old Ayumu Hirano with silver and 18 year old Taku Hiraoka with bronze.

But all attention was on two-time gold medallist Shaun White as he returned to the slopes after dropping out of the slopestyle event to avoid injury before the halfpipe competition.

He showed great promise in the heats, scoring a whopping 95.75 but failed to impress during the finals, sliding behind Taku Hiraoka to fourth place.

Three Aussie snowboarders also competed in the halfpipe competition including Kent Callister, 18, who had an impressive run during the men's finals, landing in 9th place.

Callister's teammates Scotty James and Nate Johnstone weren't as lucky. Both snowboarders did not make it to the finals.
