Syd man found dead yet to be identified

Inner Sydney residents have suggested a tree near the local dog-racing track may be a drugs hot spot after a man was found dead under its branches.

Homicide detectives have been knocking on doors and searching for witnesses after a man was found dead in an inner Sydney park.

Forensics officers spent Saturday night scouring the grass at Glebe's Wentworth Park after the body of an Asian man in his 30s - obscured by scrub and low-hanging branches - was found about lunchtime.

He is yet to be formally identified.

A sweeping figtree close to the park's historic greyhound tracks, in an area favoured by young families, was still taped off mid-morning and uniformed officers guarded a wide perimeter close to where two women went through their weekend yoga routine.

Detective Inspector Gavin Beck from Leichhardt Local Area Command would not say how long police believed the body had been lying there before it was discovered by a member of the public.

Nor would he reveal the nature of any visible injuries sustained by the dead man.

"The body has not undergone an autopsy yet, and that will hopefully provide further details of the circumstances of this man's death," Det Insp Beck told reporters.

"For operational reasons I can't go into details of the circumstances."

Police hope a post-mortem on Monday will shed more light on the man's identity.

Locals say they have often seen young people hanging around the tree at night and suggest a possible link to drugs.

"We're keeping an open mind of what led to the death of this male person," Det Insp Beck said.
