A 14-year-old girl has managed to break free from a man who tried to abduct her in broad daylight in Sydney's west, police say.

The teenager was walking along Gladstone Street, Cabramatta on Friday afternoon when she was approached by the stranger.

He reportedly took hold of the girl's arm and led her down a nearby street before she broke free from his grip and ran home, police said.

The man is described as being of Asian appearance, aged about 20, with a tall build and wearing a black hooded jumper.
