The federal government has approved Sydney Airport's 20-year masterplan which is designed to meet forecast demand of 74 million passengers by 2033.
The plan includes shared domestic and international terminals and ground transport improvements and has been designed to improve the efficiency and safety of the airport.
Sydney Airport chief executive Kerrie Maher welcomed the government's decision saying it would enable the airport to cope with the forecast increased demand.
"The approved master plan will cater to the forecast demand of 74 million passengers in 2033, an increase from the 38 million passengers we handled in 2013," she said.
"The plan includes innovative ground transport solutions developed in collaboration with the NSW government that will significantly improve access to the airport and road traffic flow around it. We've also proposed significant upgrades to our public transport facilities to facilitate more public transport services."
Sydney Airport had already started planning work for improving traffic flow such as a new road and exit for terminal one.
The remaining ground transport works were expected to be started shortly and completed by 2018.
