A fire truck is in danger of falling into a sinkhole after responding to a burst water main in Bigola in Sydney's northern beaches.

Emergency services were reportedly called to Barrenjoey Road, near The Serpentine, just before 5am after reports of flooding in the area.

"It looks like it's driven down the stormwater ditch, it's actually rolled," a witness told the ABC.

"It's not quite on its side, it's about 45 degrees tilted to its side," he said.

Sydney Water doesn't know the cause of the burst, and is trying to shut the water supply. Barrenjoey Road may need to be closed.
