A young man left the scene of an accident after allegedly hitting a woman because he was under "extreme stress and shock", a court has heard.

Ahmad Saraya turned himself in to police on Friday morning after an alleged hit-and-run fatality the night before.

A woman in her 40s was killed when a car hit her on the Hume Highway at Yagoona in Sydney's southwest.

Saraya is charged with failing to stop after a crash.

A large number of family members supported Saraya as he appeared via video link in Parramatta Local Court on Friday.

His lawyer said the 20-year-old had no intention of leaving without informing police of his whereabouts.

"He instructs me that he left the scene because he was under extreme stress and shock after the accident," he said.

The prosecution argued against bail, saying Saraya was a flight risk and had admitted to driving a car and colliding with a person.

The court heard he held interstate driver's licences and had no state of abode.

Magistrate George Zdenkowski found there was an unacceptable risk of Saraya failing to appear in court again if he was on bail.

A member of Saraya's family stormed out of court crying after he was denied bail.

The matter was adjourned to Bankstown Local Court on July 7.

Police say further charges are possible and are searching for a car that was on the road at the time of the accident.
