Sydney landslip residents go home

Victims of a landslip in Sydney have been allowed to return to their homes, but the clean-up has only just begun.

Residents of three houses on Sydney's northern beaches have been allowed to return home after a landslip.

A burst water main caused the slips on the mansion-dotted hillside at Bilgola, near Avalon, on Tuesday morning.

Residents woke to find mud throughout their homes, and five homes were damaged.

A spokesman for Sydney Water said the residents were allowed to return home shortly after 4pm on Wednesday.

"Our crews will be back on site tomorrow to continue the clean-up," he said.

Libby Meggitt was evacuated from her house after the landslip broke laundry windows and spread mud throughout the bottom level.

She spent Wednesday facing an arduous clean-up.

"There have been abseilers high up on the banks to make sure no more rubble falls down," she told AAP.

"There is mud being sucked up by big machines. It's going to be huge to do all of this.

"It's going to be quite a long haul before it's back to normal."

After spending a night at a neighbour's home, Mrs Meggitt and her husband were able to return to their house on Wednesday.

Sydney Water restored the water supply at 10pm on Tuesday.

Nearby roads affected by the landslip would reopen to residents on Wednesday night, Sydney Water said.
