A Sydney man remains in an induced coma after hitting his head on the footpath during a fight at Darling Harbour.

The 25-year-old had been out with friends at Cockle Bay Wharf when they got into an argument with a group of three men about 1am on Sunday, police say.

The argument turned into a fight and police say numerous punches were thrown, some of them hitting the 25-year-old, who then fell and hit his head on the brick promenade.

Witnesses say the trio ran off through Town Square towards Wheat Road, where they jumped into a grey or blue car.

The injured man was rushed to St Vincent's Hospital with serious head injuries and has remained in a critical condition.

Police are reviewing CCTV footage and appealing for witnesses to come forward.
