A man who confronted police armed with a baseball bat is fighting for his life after being shot in the chest and tasered by officers outside his mother's home in southwest Sydney.

Andrew Betteridge, 45, remains in a critical but stable condition and is under police guard at Liverpool Hospital following the confrontation at Ingleburn early Tuesday morning.

It's believed Betteridge had fought with his father at his home in neighbouring Macquarie Fields about 1am and later drove to his mum's place at Ingleburn with police following.

Police shot at Betteridge three times when he refused to back down while brandishing the bat.

They said he became aggressive and officers had tried to talk to him before using the stun gun.

But when it failed to stop Betteridge officers used "the last tactical option available," police said.

Ingleburn resident Gurbret Singh said he was woken by the yelling and shooting.

"Someone was yelling 'on the ground, on the ground'. Then bang, bang," Mr Singh said.

"The cop was saying something like 'you nearly hit me' and then after he got the bullet the guy was yelling at police to go away."

One of the officers involved is a senior constable with 20 years of experience and the other is a junior officer, police said.
