Sydney mum delivers first 2016 baby

Elliot Bevis has become the first baby born in a NSW public hospital for 2016. He was delivered 27 minutes into the new year.

Tiny Elliot Bevis waited ten days after his due date to make his entrance into the world and become the first NSW baby born in 2016.

Elliot was born just 27 minutes into the year at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital to parents Kathleen and Paul Bevis.

Ms Bevis says she had been scheduled to be induced on New Year's Day, 10 days after Elliot's due date, but her bouncing boy ended up coming in his own time.

"He had got to the point he was so far cooked that it was the end. So luckily he came before then," she told Fairfax Media.

The name Elliot was chosen because it was uncommon but not zany.

"We are both school teachers so we spend a lot of our time around kids," she said.

"Elliot wasn't a name that we had come across, so we know he won't be one of many in the class.

"It's funky, but he could still be an accountant."
