Sydney night economy losing 'billions'

Sydney is missing out on billions because of its underdeveloped night-time economy, according to a report.

The NSW premier concedes there is "room for improvement" when it comes to Sydney's night-time economy after new economic analysis suggested the city was potentially losing $16 billion a year.

The city's night-time economy, which is currently valued at $27 billion a year, could be worth up to $43 billion, according to a Deloitte Access Economics report.

Australia's night-time market represents 3.8 per cent of the domestic economy, compared to six per cent in the United Kingdom, according to extracts of the report published in the Sydney Morning Herald on Tuesday.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian says her government will continue to work hard to try and improve the opportunities for the city.

"There's always room for improvement and yes, of course, I'd like to see that improved but we will continue to work with relevant organisations to see what we can do," Ms Berejiklian told reporters.

Asked if NSW needed a dedicated minister for the night-time economy, Ms Berejiklian said she believed it was the responsibility of several ministers.

Clubs and hotels are lobbying the coalition government to relax Sydney's strict lockout laws introduced at Kings Cross in early 2014.
