Sydney police chase hit-and-run man

A man is on the run following a head-on crash with a truck in Sydney's west. Police had been chasing the man but stopped the pursuit for safety reasons.

A driver being pursued by police in Sydney's west has slammed his car into a truck and fled the scene.

Officers began chasing the white Holden Commodore at 10.30am after the man ignored calls to stop. However, they ended the pursuit due to excessive speed.

The car then collided head-on with a truck on Bennett Road, St Clair, with the force of the impact so strong part of Commodore's engine was dislodged and flew into another vehicle parked 15 metres away.

A police helicopter and dog squad unit have since been searching for the man, who managed to run from the scene.

He is described as Caucasian, dark-haired and about 183cm tall, and was wearing a black unbuttoned shirt and black pants.

The truck driver escaped the collision uninjured.

Bennett Road remains closed as police investigate.
