Sydney will burst into the new year with a tropical display of pyrotechnical wizardry.

This year's New Year's Eve spectacle, themed "Inspire", will cost $7.2 million, with $750,000 going on seven tonnes of fireworks.

Twelve launch computers will be used to fire more than 15,000 cues on harbour barges, buildings, the Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

"This year we've focused on making the displays as colourful as possible - you'll see a lot of metallics, as well as bright reds, greens, blues and purples," said fireworks director Fortunato Foti, who has been involved in the event since 2000.

There will be more than 11,000 shells, 25,000 shooting comets and 100,000 individual effects whizzing into the sky.

New formations include gold and silver palm trees with "shimmering centres and multi-coloured ends", said Foti.

In addition to the standard 9pm family fireworks and the midnight spectacular, there will also be a third mini-fireworks display at 10.40pm, dubbed the Inspire moment.

About 1.6 million people are expected to flock to Sydney Harbour to view the spectacle on Wednesday night.

Despite the heightened security warnings of late, Foti said this hadn't affected the event's build-up.

"It's business as usual," he said.

NSW Police will release their security plan on Tuesday.
