Sydney push killer gets three more years

A Sydney cyclist who fatally shoved an elderly woman before saying "the bitch got in my way", has had his minimum jail sentence increased by three years.

A Sydney cyclist who fatally shoved the elderly mother of ex-NRL star Joe Thomas has had three years added to his minimum jail term.

Daniel Paul Wood, of Mascot, was given a five-year minimum jail sentence after pleading guilty to the manslaughter of 71-year-old Mary Touma four years ago.

The NSW Court of Criminal Appeal on Friday upheld a Crown appeal against that sentence, handing down a new eight-year non-parole period.

Wood will now remain behind bars until at least November 2019.

His full jail term of 11 years, four months - up from six years and eight months - will not expire until March 2023.

Mrs Touma, described as a "loving and selfless person", was walking along a footpath at Eastlakes in May 2010 when Wood, confronted her and pushed her over, causing her to hit her head on concrete.

The previously active and healthy grandmother died in hospital the following day from massive blunt force head injuries.

Wood later told a passerby: "The bitch got in my way".

The Sydney District Court has previously heard Wood told a psychiatrist he swerved on his bike to avoid Ms Touma and nearly went on to the road before she "barked" at him, sparking the incident.

When asked why he didn't help her afterwards, Wood replied, "That's the $20 million question, isn't it? ... She's one of many strangers you pass in a day."
