Sydney rapist sentenced to minimum 3 years

A massage therapist who sexually and indecently assaulted female clients at a Sydney clinic has been sentenced to a minimum three years in jail.

A Sydney massage therapist who raped a woman at his clinic has been sentenced to at least three years jail.

Qing Cai "David" Wang, who earlier admitted to sexually assaulting a 67-year-old client and indecently assaulting another in May and April, was sentenced at the Sydney District Court on Friday.

As he was about to be handed his punishment Wang indicated he wanted to change his plea but then changed his mind.

In sentencing Wang, Judge Anthony Blackmore said Wang had caused physical and psychological injuries to his victims.

They had sought treatment for health problems but "instead (were) subject to a debasing sexual attack", he said.

One victim, who had lost a breast to cancer, thought the painful massages he gave several times were part of therapy.

"She thought she was a prude and this was a new way of doing massages," Judge Blackmore said.

The other victim was attacked by Wang while only wearing underpants and lying face down on a massage table.

He put his finger in her anus and asked "How does that feel?" while probing for between five to 10 minutes, the court heard.

When she was leaving the Lane Cove clinic, Wang said she needed to return the following week for a follow up.

Wang pleaded guilty to sexual intercourse without consent and indecent assault, but only at a late stage after he was warned by Judge Blackmore that a jury would find out about earlier indecent assault convictions he had for similar attacks.

By returning to work as a massage therapist after seeking work as a carpenter Wang had "deliberately placed himself in a position where he could sexually assault women," Judge Blackmore found.

The 44-year-old was given a maximum four-and-a-half year sentence with a three-year non-parole period.

His full sentence expires on December 25, 2019.
