Sydney road rage spark remains unclear

Three of four men involved in a brutal road rage fight have provided different versions to police, prompting an urgent call for independent witnesses.

A man says he was racially abused before being bashed in an apparent road rage incident that ended with one of his alleged assailants fighting for his life.

The 22-year-old was one of four men involved in the on-road assault near Quaker's Hill, in Sydney's northwest, on Wednesday night.

Investigators are trying to determine what sparked the fight after three of the men gave different versions of what happened.

Two men in a Subaru WRX and twin brothers in a Toyota Hilux were embroiled in a brawl, which played out over a two-kilometre stretch of road.

By the time emergency services were called, one of the 28-year-old twins had multiple stab wounds, a severed ear and head injuries.

He is in a critical condition in Westmead Hospital.

"These are horrific injuries and quite scary," Superintendent Rod Smith said on Thursday.

His brother suffered minor leg injuries.

The twins were found in a quiet suburban street in The Ponds, two kilometres from where police found the two men from the Subaru.

However, police believe the road rage exploded on nearby Stanhope Parkway.

On Thursday morning one of the men in the Subaru provided an animated, expletive-laden explanation to media of what happened.

Sporting a black eye, the 22-year-old said he and his 19-year-old friend were waiting at traffic lights in the Parklea area when the Toyota Hilux pulled up and the people inside shouted racist slurs.

"They were just chanting racist s**t," he said.

"I would not know if it was a racial attack but I know there are psychos out there."

He said the Toyota rammed his car - which he dubbed his "Rexy" - and tailed him until he stopped.

He claimed one man stomped on his windscreen and assaulted him.

"These guys were like three times me," he told reporters from the balcony of his friend's home.

"I'm not a big guy, imagine three times me, that was the size of this guy's f**king thigh.

"He was a big boy."

The slightly-built Caucasian man said his attackers, who he described as Pacific Islanders, weren't injured and he had no idea how they ended up in hospital.

"I mean if they are spending their nights running around chasing people, jumping on windows, I would not be surprised if they went and jumped on the wrong person's window."

It appears police are treating all victims' versions cautiously and are hoping for an independent witness to provide some clarity.

"This is day one and we have a long way to go until we get to the end of that investigation," Supt Smith said.

"It's going to take us some time."

Supt Smith said it didn't appear the twin brothers and men from the Subaru knew each other.
