A 15-year-old girl has been sexually assaulted on her way to school in Sydney's west.

Police say the teen was attacked in a laneway at Rooty Hill at 9.15am on Tuesday.

They say the man was lying in the road and when she refused to stop and talk to him, he got to his feet and grabbed her.

The girl was shoved against a fence and assaulted before she was able to break free and run.

Detectives are looking for a tall, thin 20-35-year-old man of African appearance who was wearing light grey track pants and a Nike hoodie.
