A NSW woman has been charged with human trafficking after she was stopped at Sydney Airport trying to leave the country.

The Australian Federal Police says the 45-year-old woman was arrested on Tuesday.

The AFP pounced after investigating a 27-year-old Lidcombe man who's accused of using coercion, threats and deception to force his Indian-born wife and Australian-born child to go to India in March 2017.

Detectives say the woman was involved in forcing the man's wife and child to leave the country and later destroyed the child's passport to prevent them returning to Australia.

However, the mother and daughter were able to return to Sydney before their paperwork was cancelled.

An anti-slavery group tipped off the AFP about the case in May 2017 and a border alert was put on the woman following the husband's arrest last December.

She will face Sydney Central Local Court on Wednesday charged with trafficking a person out of Australia which carries a maximum penalty of 12 years in jail.

The maximum penalty for this offence is imprisonment for 12 years.
