Sydney's botanic gardens celebrate Africa

Over 700 plants grown at the Royal Botanic Garden are from Africa

Sydney is not only multicultural in terms of people, but its plants are also diverse.

Of the 9000 plants that grow at the city's Royal Botanic Garden, 6000 plants are from other countries, including 700 from Africa.

Each year the Garden's one-day Autumn Vibes festival focuses on a particular region and this year it's highlighting the African plant collection.

"Many of our favourite plants are from Africa," says Dr Brett Summerell from the Royal Botanic Garden.

"The joint heritage of Australian and African plants on the ancient supercontinent of Gondwana means there are many families of plants that are similar and clearly evolved together before the continents separated."

One of our most loved examples is the red-flowering waratah, the official State flower of NSW, he says.

Autumn Vibes is on March 9 and features free entertainment, music, dance, talks, walks and children's activities.
