Sydney's Imperial forced shut for 72 hours

Sydney's Imperial Hotel in Erskineville - made famous in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert - will be forced to close for 72 hours.

Sydney's iconic queer pub of The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert fame will be forced to close its doors for 72 hours after repeated illegal activity.

The Independent Liquor & Gaming Authority approved an application for a three day closure of the Imperial Hotel at Erskineville over the weekend of June 19-22.

It follows numerous drug and intoxication issues, where inspectors were even offered drugs during targeted operations conducted by NSW Police Force and the Office of Liquor, Gaming & Racing (OLGR).

"A situation where bar staff and patrons are openly consuming drugs at the venue, and where there have been repeated drug and intoxication issues, is completely unacceptable and shows that the venue has been operating with a complete disregard for its obligations and responsibilities," OLGR director of compliance and enforcement Anthony Keon said in a statement on Friday.

"Without significant and material changes to the management and supervision of the venue the likelihood of further illegal activity occurring at the venue is extreme, and the only appropriate action is to close the venue."

Superintendent Simon Hardman said it sent a clear message to business owners that they will pursue any venue where illegal activity is taking place.

The Imperial has been ordered to close from 7pm on Friday until 7pm on Monday, June 22.
