Sydney's Reid eager to improve AFL game

Sydney utility Sam Reid is feeling fitter than ever after a bad run with injuries, but believes he still needs to improve his on-field performance.

He's feeling fitter than he has in AFL seasons past, but Sydney's Sam Reid says he's still got plenty of improvement left in his game.

The 22-year-old has played in each of the Swans' past six matches having overcome an Achilles injury that kept him out for four rounds earlier this year and a troublesome quad that ended his 2013 season.

"Last year was obviously really frustrating ... but now, being able to play a few in a row and get that consistent game going, I've been able to improve," Reid said on Wednesday.

"My fitness is as good as it has been. I'm able to run out games really well - that's been the best it has in a couple of years.

"So I'm feeling really good, I just need to improve more on the field now."

Reid has been very much the all-rounder for the premiership favourites, who head into Friday's MCG clash with Richmond on an eight-match winning streak following last Saturday's four-point triumph over ladder leaders Port Adelaide.

While the talented swingman has spent time alongside Lance Franklin, Kurt Tippett and Adam Goodes in the forward line, he's also been plying his trade back in defence and in the ruck.

"It's a bit different to what I'm used to in my first few years, playing as that traditional deeper forward, but I'm enjoying it and learning along the way," he said.

"I think it takes the focus off everyone, having that many targets up forward.

"Having Buddy frees up Kurt, having Kurt frees up Buddy - it frees up all of us, so it's a handy thing to have."

After enjoying an "electric" atmosphere at the SCG on Saturday, Reid backed a call by Swans chief executive Andrew Ireland to bring back finals football to the ground.

The club is contracted to play home finals at ANZ Stadium, but negotiations on a new deal for 2017 and beyond are due to begin in coming months.
