Sydney's Vivid fest heads to the suburbs

Sydney's 2015 Vivid light and sound spectacle will expand across Chatswood and the Central Park development in Chippendale.

Sydney's Vivid light and sound festival will venture outside its CBD stomping ground this year.

The annual spectacle will be expanded across Chatswood and the Central Park development in Chippendale.

"Chatswood's going to offer a very special trip to the 'burbs," Vivid's creative director Ignatius Jones said on Wednesday.

Indie veteran Morrisey will headline the 2015 event with four shows at the Sydney Opera House.

Australian rockers the Hoodoo Gurus will perform at the Powerhouse Museum for one day, while Emmy-winning writer and producer Matthew Weiner - famous for his work on The Sopranos and Mad Men - will top the Vivid Ideas bill.

NSW Premier Mike Baird launched the 2015 program at the Sydney Opera House on Wednesday morning.

"This is undoubtedly going to be the biggest, the best, the brightest," Mr Baird said.

He joked that he hoped he was still in the job by the time the festival kicks off in May.

"(Traditionally) the premier of the state gets to push the button.

"That's on the 22nd of May. So I'm hoping very much I get to push that button," Mr Baird said.

Vivid runs for 18 days.
