Syria action based on self-defence: Bishop

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says intervention in Syria against Islamic State targets is being based on the legal principle of collective self-defence.

If Australia was to help fight Islamic State targets in Syria it would be based on the legal principle of collective self-defence, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says.

The federal government is considering a request from the US to join the air operation over the country, like it is in Iraq.

The US and Canada are using the legal principle of collective self-defence in Syria and it would be "problematic" to seek a UN mandate given Russia is backing the Assad regime, Ms Bishop told Network Ten on Sunday.
