A New Zealand man accused of preparing to fight in the Syrian civil war said he was going there to meet a fiancee, but didn't know her name, prosecutors will argue.
Mohamed Amin, 23, is charged with four counts of preparing to enter a foreign state to engage in armed hostilities.
He was arrested as part of an operation that also charged an alleged recruiter, a Melbourne court has heard.
Police allege Amin set up a phone in a false name, applied for a New Zealand passport, booked a flight to Turkey and made arrangements to enter Syria via Turkey in September 2013, court documents show.
In the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday, Magistrate Charles Rozencwajg said Amin claimed he was going to meet a woman he was engaged to.
"He's going to meet a fiancee whose name he doesn't know, that's the prosecution case," Mr Rozencwajg said.
Prosecutors said about 40 taped conversations will be tendered in court.
The court also heard Amin's defence attorney would call a witness who says Amin was "never extreme" in his views about Islam.
Amin, a New Zealand citizen, is being held in the Maribyrnong detention centre, after being transferred from Sydney's Villawood detention centre two weeks ago.
He will return to court for a contested committal hearing on October 2.
