Tahs would love code hopper Hayne

NSW Waratahs stalwart Dean Mumm says his side would love to have Jarryd Hayne aboard after he missed out on Fiji's Olympic sevens rugby squad.

The NSW Waratahs are a proven home for code hoppers and lock Dean Mumm would love to see former NRL star and NFL player Jarryd Hayne join them, but the numbers might not stack up.

Hayne is expected to make a decision on his sporting future in coming weeks after revealing on Monday that he'd missed out on selection for Fiji's Olympic rugby sevens squad.

His chances of playing rugby in Australia are diminished by the fact he won't qualify for an ARU top-up payment because he has already represented Fiji.

A move back to rugby league, particularly his old club Parramatta, or linking with an overseas rugby union side are among the options Hayne is likely to consider.

NSW Rugby Union CEO Andrew Hore suggested the salary cap could be a potential stumbling block, but stopped short of definitively ruling out a bid for Hayne.

"We are constantly looking at a number of players," Hore said.

"But, like any of these decisions, we need to consider a number of factors, including salary cap, foreign player number, positional fit within the team and personal character."

The Waratahs have a history of signing league converts as backs including the likes of Wallabies Lote Tuqiri, Mat Rogers, Wendell Sailor, Timana Tahu and Israel Folau.

Just last week Folau expressed a desire to see Hayne at the Waratahs and former captain and stalwart Mumm echoed similar sentiments on Monday.

"Izzy' (Israel Folau) has played a couple of sports so we're always a good home for someone who has been around a couple of different codes," second rower Mumm said.

"If he's available we'd love to have him here."

Waratahs attack coach Chris Malone, who described Hayne as "a phenomenal athlete," has no doubt the code hopper could be a successful 15-a-side-player.

"If you're dishing the ball and asking him to get you going forward, I think he'd be fairly good at doing that," Malone said.

"You could play him in the back three, you might be able to play him in the centres, don't know if he'd play 10 or 9."
